The Evening Standard: Tory mayoral hopeful Philippa Roe: I would give more power to London’s town halls
Conservative mayoral hopeful Philippa Roe today called for the most radical devolution of power — and money — to London town halls since the Sixties.
Ms Roe, the leader of Westminster City Council, said responsibilities should be passed on to individual boroughs rather than to clusters of councils, as happens elsewhere in the country. She said her “devolution revolution” was the best way to tackle some of the capital’s biggest challenges, and a “one size fits all” strategy would not work.
Ministers are drawing up devolution plans in which powers would be awarded to the Mayor and to councils in fixed, legally constituted groups.
